Gangtok police on Friday night conducted a raid in a four storied building operating an illegal gambling business. Police also seized chips worth Rs 52, 58, 400.
A team led by DSP Bishal Rai, Sub Inspectors Silash Tamang, Roshan Pradhan and Yogendra Gurung along with other police personnel conducted the raid.
According to the police, there were several complaints from the residents of Pani House. Police arrested Topgay Bhutia, the man operating the business. He had taken a building on rent at Rs 80,000 per month.
“The second floor had a poker table surrounded by 11 black chairs, there was a small drawer in the corner of the room which had large numbers of chips (chips used in place of cash) in it, the chips were multicolored and written Sikkim Aces on it. Further, playing cards, record sheets, drinks, calculator, glasses etc were found. All the above exhibits were photographed, seized and sealed in the presence of two independent witnesses under a memo” said the police
A case was registered under the Sikkim Regulation of Gambling (Amendment) Act, 2005 against Bhutia and others. They were later released upon furnishing surety bond.
