Assam: MLA rapped for wearing T-Shirt in state Assembly; asked to dress appropriately

Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami on Friday asked the ministers and MLAs to dress up appropriately after Congress legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha came to the House wearing a T-shirt.

The Speaker, in the pre-lunch session, said it has come to his notice that some members attend the Assembly proceedings wearing T-shirts and urged the members to choose the attire as per the dignity of the House.

The Speaker, however, got miffed when he saw Purkaystha again coming to the Assembly wearing the T-shirt when the House resumed after the lunch break and did not allow him to speak till he changed his attire.

“With this outfit, I cannot allow you to speak. I request you to please change your outfit. Please follow the dress code. I said this in the morning also though I did not mention any name,” he told the Congress MLA from Karimganj North.

The Speaker’s rebuke finally compelled Purkayastha to take off his T-shirt and wear a formal shirt.

Purkayastha said he wore the T-shirt because it bears writings in Bengali, which is his mother tongue and also the official language in Barak Valley from where he comes.

Goswami told reporters that the MLAs should dress in a proper manner. “We should not dress in a manner that gives the impression that we are casual about the Assembly,” he said. The Speaker said Jonai MLA Bhubon Pegu would be given the best legislator award for 2017-18 during the 81st Foundation Anniversary Celebration of the Assembly on Saturday.
